He started his career as a broker at the Paris commodity exchange working on the sugar and coffee markets. He quickly entered the banking world by working for Crédit Lyonnais where he mastered the fundamentals of financing International trade both from a legal and technical point of view.
He later moved to VTB Bank (France), a Russian owned bank in Paris, where he was employed for sixteen years. He was recruited to develop the activity in the Commodity Finance department. During that period he occupied a number of posts from Senior Account Manager where he developed a client base of multinationals and major international trading companies to Head of Commodity Finance department leading a team of 8 people and finally before leaving the bank he was Head of the Trade Finance and Financial Institutions Department where he supervised the relationship with customers in the international trade market.
He has structured deals for some of the world’s major commodity houses and has extensive experience in financing complex trade finance packages using letters of credit and all their subtle variations as well as guarantees and insurance. During the later years in the bank he would concentrate on the risk aspects of a transaction being a voting member of the Credit Committee and sign off on the legal documentation.
He has financed more than 400 trade transactions in most commodities, oil, coal, soya, wheat, sugar, copper worth ca. $3bn. When working for VTB he won a Deal of the Year award from both Global Trade Review and Trade Finance Magazine for a EUR 40 million pre-export financing facility in favour of Vyborg Wood Pellet Plant. He has also participated in several multi-million dollar financings of soya agro-industrial companies in Brazil.
He is a Member of the Board of Directors of Standard Commerce Bank (www.standardcommercebank.com), an off-shore bank based in Dominica specialised in financing SME’s through the issuance of SBLC’s or Guarantees.
He is regularly called upon to be an expert witness for international arbitrations and court cases. Out of court settlements have been agreed upon based on his affidavits.
